Step 1: Locating a Book

Once you identify a book in our collection you want, find its call number to determine its location (more on location below). The screenshot below shows where you'll find it in the book's item description.

Screenshot of library book listing in catalog with availability listed as "Available at Cooper Library, PR6055. L54 D83 2019, and other locations"

Cooper Library has books on several floors; the first letter of the call number will tell you which floor to visit, but some items are located in special areas or at other campus locations, so make sure you know before heading to the stacks.

Which floor has my call number?

Call Number/Collection
Floor
A-P* 1st Floor
Maps 1st Floor
Children's & Young Adult 3rd Floor
Federal & State Documents 3rd Floor
Popular Reading & Media 4th Floor
Popular Magazines & Oversize 5th Floor
Q-Z 5th Floor

*Some items are in special areas of Cooper or other parts of campus.
See the PDF in "Links & Files" at the bottom or our floor maps for more information.

Step 2: Find it on the shelf

With the above in mind, you're ready to find the book!

  1. Use the book's call number to determine the floor, then locate the correct shelf. Shelves have labels on each end that list the range of call numbers they contain.
  2. Referencing your call number, begin searching the shelf by finding items with the same classification (the letters at the beginning), then those in the same number range, narrowing your search.
  3. At last you should arrive at your book. You're ready to check out!
  4. Check out the book at the Library Services Desk located on the 4th floor or by using our self-checkout app

If you have any trouble locating an item, please contact us at the 4th floor Library Services Desk or by calling (864) 656-1557.
